Born around 1043 in Vivar, near Burgos, Rodrigo was raised in aworld marked by the coexistence of Christians, Muslims and Jews, and by the constant wars of reconquest. From a young age, he displayed exceptional skills in the art of war, forging himself a reputation as a military leader of unmatched dexterity and bravery. His nickname, "Campeador," meaning "battler" in Old Spanish, was bestowed upon him for his skills on the battlefield, while "El Cid," derived from the Arabic "sidi," meaning lord, reflected the respect even his enemies had for him.

The history of El Cid is marked by its complex relationship with King Alfonso VI of León and Castile. Despite initially being a loyal vassal to the King, he was exiled twice due to courtly intrigues and political disagreements. During his exile, El Cid became a mercenary, rendering his services to various lords, including Muslims, a pragmatic decision that demonstrated his ability to navigate a world divided by intense religious and political rivalries.

His most memorable feat was the conquest of Valencia in 1094. Fighting against both rebel Christians and Muslim forces, El Cid managed to take and maintain the city, establishing it as a bastion of peaceful coexistence between different cultures and religions. Valencia, under his government , flourished as a center of commerce and culture, and El Cid remained undefeated in its defense until his death in 1099.

The legend of El Cid was immortalized in "El Cantar de Mio Cid," an epic poem written after his death, which recounts his feats in a heroic and romantic tone. This poem is a key piece of Spanish literature and one of the great epics of the European Middle Ages.
